Lake and mountain experience
In the realm of the marmots / Nockalm Road
(Across the Biosphere Park of the Carinthian Nockberge)
Departure after breakfast (between 9 and 9:30 am). We drive along the Millstätter See (the 2t largest, but deepest (150m) lake in Carinthia), on the old road through the Liesertal to the beautiful medieval Tauern town of GMÜND.
After a short guided tour through the romantic side streets, past the old castle, the Ferdinand Porsche Park and many artists' workshops, we take a short coffee break. The tour continues in the direction of the Nockalm Road, right across a diverse floral splendour up to an altitude of 2000m, where you have a fantastic round trip into the surrounding mountain world. We stop for lunch in a rustic, old mountain inn with local and homemade delicacies such as Kaiserschmarren, Carinthian noodles and much more. Here we visit how one can still bathe in larch wood troughs and find healing. We continue through spruce and Swiss stone pine forests over the Schiesltscharte to the Windebensee, with the possibility of a short round walk on the beautiful flower nature trail. The tour ends at the famous short and winter sports resort Bad Kleinkirchheim, known for its thermal baths, the music open air concert, the FS and the world cup race.
Arrival at the hotel approx. 16.30 - 17.00 hrs.
Carinthian Lakes Tour
Carinthia is the "land of 1000 lakes", most of which reach a pleasant water temperature of up to 27°C - an effect of the Mediterranean-influenced climate. The journey goes via Bad Kleinkirchheim, the upper Gurk valley to the district town of Feldkirchen, and from there on to the Ossiachsee south shore with the Ossiach Monastery. It is worth visiting the old Benedictine monastery with the collegiate church, famous for its beautiful stucco work and wall frescos.
We continue to the largest lake, the Wörthersee to Velden, where we enjoy a short walk to the eastern shore with the famous Velden Castle. We circle the lake until Reifnitz, where we have the possibility to have a lunch break directly at the lake shore. If there is enough time, you can make a detour from there to the Pyramidenkogel with the newly built lookout tower, where you have a unique view of a large part of Carinthia. Afterwards, one should not miss the peninsula Maria Wört with the two churches worth seeing. The tour continues along the southern shore with the millionaire's villas into the Drau Valley with a reservoir, then around Lake Faakersee to Villach, the 2t largest city. The tour ends in the Gegendtal with the Afritzersee and the Feldsee.
Malta High Alpine Road and Kölnbrein Dam
The journey leads again along the Millstätter See to Gmünd and from there it branches off into the Maltatal, into the "valley of the falling waters". Over one of the most spectacular alpine roads, past the Malteiner Wasserspiele, through six natural stone tunnels we reach a height of 1900m. From there we have an impressive view of the 200m high dam wall in the middle of a wonderful high alpine mountain world. On request we can also enjoy a guided tour and briefing followed by lunch in the mountain restaurant. AM afternoon we experience nature in miniature - in Austria's largest bonsai museum, above Seeboden on Lake Millstätter See. ZEN gardens provide the necessary framework for presenting bonsai on over 3000m². Many of the exhibits are over 100 years old - incomparable in quality and appearance.
Carinthian castles and palaces
The journey goes again via Bad Kleinkirchheim to the upper Gurktal - Ebene Reichenau. From there we branch off onto the Hochrindl mountain road, enjoy a wonderful view into the Klagenfurt basin from the highest point, past Sirnitz with Albeck Castle and return to the Gurk valley. Here we stop in Gurk with the monastery and the cultural-historical famous cathedral with its valuable art treasures. A short guided tour to the interesting crypt is also possible. We continue on to Strasbourg with its imposing castle and reach the madder field, the granary of Carinthia, at Pöckstein Castle, the former summer residence of the Carinthian bishops. At the longitudinal lake we admire the monastery. St. Georgen, and then during a photo stop the pride of Carinthia, the all outshining castle Hochosterwitz, which has never been taken in its changeful history. Via St. Donant we reach the old ducal town of St. Vitus, where we can have a small lunch after a short tour of the old town. We head home via the Glantal valley with the Kraiger castles to Feldkirchen, Himmelberg with its castle and the old scythe forges.
We drive along the Gegendtal towards Wörthersee (in good weather we would drive along the Wörthersee, on the north side to the Loibl Pass) and then we are already on our way towards Bled. We circle this beautiful place Bled, with its Marienkirche in the lake, and then we make a stay in Bled of about 1 ½ hours. There you could also have lunch. Then we drive through a beautiful valley towards Italy, the upper Sava valley, past Kranjska Gora to Italy. At the end we can visit the market in Tarvis and then we are back at the hotel at about 16.30 o'clock.
